Seminoles QB Winston named AP player of the year

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Winter of Winston continues for Florida State's redshirt freshman quarterback.

Jameis Winston is The Associated Press national player of the year, adding to his cadre of postseason accolades. He's this year's Heisman Trophy winner, the Walter Camp national player of the year, the Davey O'Brien quarterback of the year and the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year.

Seminole football fans should send a thank you note to Florida State's baseball program.

If not for coach Mike Martin Sr. and one of his assistants, Mike Martin Jr., Winston — a two-sport athlete — might not be preparing to lead the No.1-ranked Seminoles against No. 2 Auburn in the BCS championship game Jan. 6 with the opportunity to bring a third national title back to the Florida State campus.

When Winston won the Heisman he thanked the usual cast of family, coaches and teammates. Then there was the thanks to "Eleven" and "Meat." Most of the country ignored the peculiar names, but Winston wouldn't have attended Florida State without the warm relationship between football coach Jimbo Fisher and the Florida State baseball coaching staff. "Eleven" — otherwise known as baseball coach Martin Sr., who has led the program for 34 years, and "Meat" — Martin Jr.

Martin Jr. was on a recruiting trip to watch Winston during his junior year of high school when he called to let Fisher know. Fisher actually had tape of Winston on his desk at the time and decided to put it in. About 30 minutes later, Fisher called Martin Jr. back and said, "Don't let him get away."

Winston hit a game-winning home run that day.

"Jimbo Fisher deserves the credit for giving the young man the opportunity to display his talents in another sport," Martin Sr. said.

Fisher covets players that come from diverse backgrounds where football wasn't their only sport. He actively looks for athletes that play numerous positions on the football field and play different sports.

"It makes you a different kind of competitor," Fisher said. "You learn to learn the different situations. Handle different pressures. Handle noise. Handle quiet. Different games are played in different ways and in different environments. ... You're constantly competing and you don't get in that rut of you only get it once a year. I think when you're getting it two and three different times of year, the more you're in competitive situations, the more you find out about yourself. ...

"Every time you compete you learn something about yourself. I think it's very good for athletes to do. I wish more athletes were multi-sport guys than they are now."

Just like the Heisman voting, Winston was a landslide winner in AP player of the year voting. He received 49 out of 56 votes cast by AP Top 25 college football poll voters.

Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch received three votes. Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron got two votes. Boston College running back Andre Williams and Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard each received one vote.

Winston is the first Florida State player to win the award, which has been handed out since 1998, and the first from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida State and Winston continued to excel despite a sexual assault investigation that became public last month. The State Attorney's Office announced that it would not press charges before the ACC championship game.

Bo Jackson, the 1985 Heisman winner, was also a two-sport star from Winston's hometown of Bessemer, Ala. The 19-year-old Winston said after the Heisman ceremony that he wants to better than Jackson. The Texas Rangers drafted Winston in the 15th round of the 2012 MLB draft, but he elected to go to school.

Winston will compete for the closer job for the No. 5-ranked Seminoles when baseball begins.

He has a fastball that reaches 93-95 miles per hour and throws a slider for strikes. Martin Sr. said there are no restrictions on the quarterback outside of the normal rest for pitchers. Winston is poised to become the sixth winner in Heisman history to play collegiate baseball after winning the award and the first since Jackson in 1986, according to STATS LLC.

Martin Sr. believes Winston could be the No. 1 overall pick in the MLB draft if he was to singularly focus on baseball, but the coach doesn't want that. He sees Winston as a first-round pick in both baseball and football.

"I never want him to devote full time to baseball because then I would miss out on his talent in football," Martin Sr. said. "He's just one of those rare athletes that only come around once in a blue moon."

Winston said baseball helped him "a lot with football because baseball is a failing game. As a quarterback you have to handle every situation the same.

"So when I throw a touchdown I'll celebrate and whatnot but when I throw a pick I keep my head up and say my fault guys and move on and keep stuff going. Baseball helped me with that."

49ers beat Falcons 34-24 to clinch playoff berth

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In one emphatic finish, NaVorro Bowman, Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers sealed their postseason berth in a celebratory regular-season finale at Candlestick Park.

Bowman returned an interception 89 yards for a touchdown with 1:10 remaining, and the 49ers clinched a playoff berth with a wild 34-24 victory against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night that likely was the final game at San Francisco's longtime home.

Tramaine Brock broke up a pass intended for Harry Douglas and Bowman got his hands on the ball and took off. He was joined in the end zone by his teammates for a jubilant dog pile.

"I always say a lot of plays are made when you run to the ball," Bowman said. "That's all I was doing was just running to the ball, trying to make a tackle, and it popped up and I was able to make a play for my team."

Matt Ryan threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Roddy White with 8:42 remaining and a 2-yard score to Tony Gonzalez with 2:09 left as the Falcons (4-11) made things interesting until the end.

Atlanta's Jason Snelling recovered the ensuing onside kick as the Falcons got the ball back and were driving for a potential go-ahead score when San Francisco (11-4) capitalized with one of its biggest takeaways yet.

Kaepernick ran for a 4-yard touchdown and threw a 10-yard TD pass to Anquan Boldin, and Frank Gore had a 1-yard touchdown run as the 49ers used a big second half to clinch a third straight playoff season and fifth consecutive victory. They put up 169 yards in the third quarter after managing just 113 in the first half as the sellout crowd fell momentarily quiet.

San Francisco still has a slim chance at winning a third consecutive NFC West crown if St. Louis wins at Seattle and they beat Arizona on the road.

During an evening of fanfare and famous faces for The Stick's ceremonious farewell, Kaepernick took charge as his team made good on coach Jim Harbaugh's mantra for the week: "We don't want to be the guys who screw up the final game in Candlestick."

"There's a lot of history in this stadium," Bowman said. "For this to be the last game, we cannot leave it with an L. So I'm glad we got the W."

Boldin had a 10-yard touchdown catch that tied it at 10 with 12:03 left in the third, and Kaepernick ran for a score early in the fourth.

This rematch of the NFC championship game featuring teams headed in opposite directions was another thriller. The 49ers won 28-24 last January in Atlanta to return to the Super Bowl for the first time in 18 years.

Boldin caught six passes for 72 yards and went over 1,000 yards receiving for the sixth time in his career and first since 2009.

Michael Crabtree adjusted to make a 47-yard catch on an underthrown pass by Kaepernick in the third quarter, and then made a 19-yard reception on the play before Boldin's score.

Crabtree added five catches for 102 yards on a day tight end Vernon Davis didn't have a reception for the first time all season.

With the future of the 49ers on display, there were plenty of glimpses to the past — and five Super Bowl titles.

Joe Montana's winning touchdown pass "The Catch" to Dwight Clark was celebrated at halftime as the No. 1 moment during a top-10 countdown during each home game this year. The special spot in the right corner of the north end zone was marked with a gold dot. That victory in the NFC championship game after the 1981 season sent San Francisco to its first Super Bowl title.

The 49ers are set to move into $1.2 billion Levi's Stadium at team headquarters in Santa Clara while Candlestick waits out its implosion day, likely in late 2014.

Ryan completed 18 of his first 22 passes and didn't make the mistakes that have hurt him so often during a 1-7 showing away from the Georgia Dome this year.

White had 12 catches for 141 yards and retiring Falcons tight end Gonzalez eight for 63 yards in his final game back in the Bay Area, where he starred collegiately at Cal. Ryan wound up 37 for 48 for 348 yards.

AP Source: Von Miller out for season with torn ACL

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that Broncos linebacker Von Miller's season is over after tests revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because coach John Fox had not yet addressed the media at his regular Monday news conference.

Miller was injured in the first quarter of Denver's 37-13 win at Houston on Sunday.

The injury ended a rough third season for the Broncos star, which began with a six-game drug suspension and finished with just five sacks in 10 games.

He had 30 sacks in his first two NFL seasons.

5 things to know after Manning breaks record

HOUSTON (AP) — Peyton Manning never dreamed he'd throw an NFL record 51 touchdowns just two years removed from neck surgeries that threatened to end his career.

Manning reflected on his remarkable comeback soon after regaining the NFL record for touchdown passes in a season in Denver's 37-13 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday that gave the Broncos their third straight AFC West title.

"There was major unpredictability," Manning said. "So a lot of (doctors) said: 'Maybe you'll come back to this level and maybe not.' So there was definitely some wait and see ... but no, it would be hard to say you could have imagined this at that point."

He missed the entire 2011 season after four neck surgeries weakened his right triceps and put his future in question.

Now 37, Manning regained his record when he threw for 400 yards and four touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter. He surpassed the 50 TD passes Tom Brady threw in 2007 and led the Broncos (12-3) to the victory over the Texans (2-13) that extended Houston's franchise-record skid to 13 games.

Manning did it on a 25-yard pass to Julius Thomas with 4:28 remaining. Just 2½ minutes earlier, he tied the mark with a 20-yard pass to Eric Decker.

He entered the game with 47 and his first touchdown came on a 36-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas in the second quarter. The second was a 10-yard throw to Decker earlier in the fourth period.

Manning had previously established the record by throwing 49 touchdown passes in 2004.

"It's just amazing to be able to be a part of it," Denver center Manny Ramirez said. "Everything we see from Peyton, being prepared, it's worked for him."

The Broncos already had a spot in the playoffs, but their victory, combined with Kansas City's loss to Indianapolis, gave them the division crown.

"It's never fun to be on the opposite end of a record-breaking performance," Houston defensive end J.J. Watt said. "The guy is a heck of a football player and you give credit where credit is due. There is a reason the guy should be MVP this year."

Five things to know about the Broncos-Texans game:

ANDRE'S RECORD: Houston receiver Andre Johnson finished with four catches for 63 yards. He has 103 catches this season to reach 100 for the fifth time in his career, tying an NFL record for most seasons with at least that many receptions. Johnson entered the game needing one catch to reach the mark held by Denver's Wes Welker. He did it on a 33-yard reception in the first quarter. Johnson also had more than 100 receptions in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2012.

"It's all fine and dandy," Johnson said of the record, "but I only play the game for one reason, and that's to win. It's a great thing to happen, but under these circumstances it really doesn't matter."

NO WELKER, NO PROBLEM: Welker missed his second straight game after sustaining his second concussion in four weeks on Dec. 8. But Manning still had a big day thanks to the strong play of Denver's other receivers. Decker led the Broncos with 10 receptions for 131 yards, and Demaryius Thomas had eight catches for 123 yards. Julius Thomas added six receptions for 78 yards.

Demaryius Thomas leads the team with 1,317 yards receiving, Decker has a career-high 1,261 and Julius Thomas 752, also a career-best.

SCHAUB'S LAST HOORAH IN HOUSTON? Matt Schaub started for the first time since Oct. 13 in place of the injured Case Keenum. He finished with 176 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. Schaub, benched for Keenum after a terrible six games, admitted that he has thought about the possibility Sunday was his last game for Houston.

"It has definitely crossed my mind," he said. "I didn't want to think too far ahead, but I've played this game long enough to know how things work."

MILLER'S KNEE: The Broncos lost star linebacker Von Miller to a knee injury in the first quarter. Miller was able to walk off the field on his own after being hurt in the first quarter. Miller was the second overall pick in the 2011 draft and won Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. He was suspended for the first six games this season after violating the league's drug-abuse policy. He has started all nine games since his return and has five sacks.

Denver coach John Fox didn't have an update on Miller's condition after the game.

"They'll have tests," Fox said. "Anything until we get all of the tests will be purely speculation, so we will just wait until we hear something definitive."

KNOWSHON 1K: Denver's Knowshon Moreno had 11 carries for 76 yards on Sunday to reach 1,015 yards for his first career 1,000-yard rushing season and the 20th in franchise history. He also had two receptions for 26 yards to give him 507 yards receiving and make him the first player in Denver history to have 1,000 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving in a season.

Manning set NFL TD passes record with 51

HOUSTON (AP) — Peyton Manning has broken Tom Brady's NFL record for most touchdown passes in a season with 51.

Denver's Manning did it on a 25-yard pass to Julius Thomas with 4:28 remaining in the game Sunday against the Texans. Just 2 1-2 minutes earlier, he tied the mark with a 20-yard pass to Eric Decker.

"I really feel like it's a team accomplishment, certainly an offensive accomplishment," Manning said. "There's a lot of people that played roles in this."

Manning made the throw to Thomas and walked toward the end zone, where his teammates patted him on the head. He then took off his helmet and walking to the sideline and pumped his fist once. His teammates came out to greet him and he gave dozens of high-fives as he grinned and walked to the bench.

Decker picked up the ball after Thomas dropped it and tucked it in the side of his jersey, where it remained as he walked off the field.

Manning entered the game with 47 TDs and his first touchdown came on a 36-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas in the second quarter. The second one was a 10-yard throw to Decker early in the fourth period.

"We're not surprised at what Peyton does," Julius Thomas said. "The work he puts in every day, you see how he demands the best from himself. Fortunate for us, we're the beneficiaries of that."

Brady set the record, which previously belonged to Manning, in 2007. Manning had established the record by throwing 49 touchdown passes in 2004.

"They were able to make the big plays and we weren't able to stop them from doing that," Houston safety Shiloh Keo said.

Surrounded by the best targets he's ever had, operating a turbocharged assault with a body that's much less a question mark, Manning is putting up record numbers like he did in that remarkable 2004 season.

That year, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Brandon Stokley all topped 1,000 yards receiving. Manning established NFL records with 49 touchdown throws and a 121.1 passer rating, marks since surpassed by Brady and Aaron Rodgers (122.5).

Manning was the NFL's 2012 Comeback Player of the Year, showing he was every bit as good as before. He's having his best season at age 37, just two years removed from the four neck surgeries that weakened his right triceps and threatened his career. He hadn't missed a start with the Colts before 2011.

Last week, Houston interim coach Wade Phillips said Manning's season was "just the best year ever of any quarterback."

Manning began 2013 by becoming the first quarterback since 1969 to throw for seven touchdowns in a game. Earlier this month he broke an NFL record he held with Brett Favre for most playoff appearances when he qualified for his 13th trip to the postseason.

Although he could set several more standards this season, Manning has insisted his only concern is the Broncos' win-loss record. He wants desperately to gain home-field advantage and the top seed in the AFC playoffs again.

Manning finished Sunday's game with a career-high 5,211 yards passing. He is 266 from surpassing the single-season record for yards passing set by Drew Brees in 2011.

Manning ties NFL TD passes record with 50

HOUSTON (AP) — Peyton Manning has tied Tom Brady's NFL record for most touchdown passes in a season with 50.

Denver's Manning did it on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Eric Decker with 6:57 left in the fourth quarter Sunday against the Houston Texans.

He entered the game with 47 and his first touchdown came on a 36-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas in the second quarter, and the second one was a 10-yard throw to Decker earlier in the fourth.

Brady set the record, which previously belonged to Manning, in 2007. Manning had established the record by throwing 49 touchdown passes in 2004.

The four-time MVP is in his second season in Denver after missing all of 2011 following neck injuries and surgeries. The first overall pick in the 1998 draft, Manning spent his first 14 seasons in Indianapolis, with whom he won a Super Bowl in 2006.

Hirscher wins, Ligety 3rd in Alta Badia GS

ALTA BADIA, Italy (AP) — Two-time defending overall World Cup champion Marcel Hirscher won the challenging giant slalom on the Gran Risa course with two solid runs Sunday, while favorite Ted Ligety finished third at the site of one of his most memorable victories.

Hirscher, an Austrian, clocked a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 37.45 seconds for his second consecutive GS win after a victory in Val d'Isere, France, last weekend.

Alexis Pinturault of France finished second, 0.35 seconds behind, and Ligety, the American who won by a massive margin last year, was 0.41 back.

Another American, Tim Jitloff, finished fifth to match his career best result.

Bode Miller failed to advance from the first run, which he finished in 40th.

The men's circuit resumes next Sunday with a downhill in Bormio.
