NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams overcame the wind and 15 unforced errors Sunday to take the first set of the U.S. Open final, 7-5 over Victoria Azarenka.
Williams is going for a second straight U.S. Open title. This is a rematch of last year's final, which she won in three sets.
The top-seeded Williams was wearing a flimsy tennis dress that distracted her when it flapped in the gusts of up to 20 mph. She had 15 unforced errors to eight for second-seeded Azarenka.
But Williams hit a strong return on Azarenka's final serve of the 11th game to go up a break, then served out the set at love.
The first-set winner of the women's final at the U.S. Open has won the last 18 titles.
